You are invited to take part in the upcoming 200-hour Radiance Sutras Meditation Teacher Training. This course is a combination of online study, in-person retreats at beautiful locations, one-to-one coaching, and a series of guided meditations that you can practice on your own at home. You can take the course for your own development and to learn and practice meditations that suit your individual nature, and you can take it to develop skills as a teacher of meditation and become certified by Yoga Alliance.

There are a set of skills you can learn and teach that let meditation be utterly natural, restful, and profoundly rejuvenating. The skills of meditation are similar to that of loving anyone or anything – ways of paying attention that open the doorways to intimacy and excitement. After using, practicing, and researching these skills for the past half a century, Dr. Lorin Roche is opening the door wide to train teachers in this system. Come as you are, and learn at your own pace. You can go rapidly or you can take your time and savor everything in a leisurely way.

The training is for anyone who desires to learn more about this natural, life-affirming approach to meditation. This is a very human, tender, and loving practice for yourself or to share with others. You do not need to be a yoga teacher to apply.


200-hour Radiance Sutras Meditation Teacher Training is a two-year program, but you may take up to five years to fulfill.

If you complete all of the hours and demonstrate all of the core competencies you will be a certified 200-hour Radiance Sutras Meditation Teacher.

The hours are made up of:

70 contact hours, which you can obtain in workshops at Kripalu (Massachusetts), Esalen (Big Sur, California), Costa Rica, Australia (Sydney, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast), and other beautiful locations.

130 non-contact hours (assignments listed below)

10 conference call seminars with Dr. Lorin Roche
3 private telephone or Skype sessions with Lorin Roche or Camille Maurine
Homework assignments
Reading assignments
30 Practice sessions
Contributing to Facebook group discussion
Small group work
5 years to complete (we recommend you complete in 2 years)

Year One Meditation Teacher Training:

10 conference call seminars (dates and times listed below)
All reading assignments
At least 15 practice sessions with “practice clients”
At least one private phone or Skype session with Lorin Roche (must complete a total of 3 private sessions with Lorin Roche throughout the training)

Year Two:

All practice sessions complete (30 total)
All homework and reading assignments complete
Complete private sessions with Lorin Roche (must complete a total of 3 sessions through out the training)
Final exam

MEDITATION TEACHER TRAINING with Dr. Lorin Roche and the Radiance Sutras Teacher Training Faculty

These are the core topics:

1. INTRODUCTION TO THE SCIENCE AND PRACTICE OF MEDITATION. Overview of the Radiance Sutras Approach which utilizes 112 different doorways into meditation. Research on the benefits of meditation and why 20 million Americans are meditating, plus millions more in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, South America, and elsewhere. Meditation is a completely natural and instinctive capacity of the human body and everyone can do it. The experience of meditation is rhythmic, intimate, and individualistic. Introduction to the Eight Essential Meditations we will be using as a foundation.

2. SPONTANEITY AND RHYTHM. An important part of the art and science of teaching meditation is the ability to recognize spontaneous meditative states. Almost everyone has a wealth of naturally occurring meditative experience, that is a foundation to their further practice and a clue to their inherent nature. A skilled meditation teacher learns how to cooperate with the student’s inner nature, not suppress it. You will learn to structure a meditation practice so that it feels spontaneous, using Skills Checklists and Meditation Flowlists.

3. THE SUBTLE SENSUOUS WORLD OF MEDITATION. Develop the ability to recognize and utilize all the senses as gateways into meditation: inner and outer hearing, touch, motion, balance, joint position, oxygen sensing, vision, smell and taste. This is the Indriya Mandala. Human beings have more than a dozen senses, and they are all essential aspects of a healthy approach to meditation.

4. INSTINCTIVE WISDOM. Learn how to recognize and honor the instincts – the self-healing, self-evolving, powerful innate wisdom impulses of life: homing, exploring, trail making, gathering, nesting, resting, feeding, communing with nature, bonding, mating, protecting. During meditation, pranashakti fluctuates between these instinctive modes as needed, every few seconds or minutes. A skillful meditation teacher embraces all the instincts as they inspire and balance each other.

5. ELEMENTAL ADAPTABILITY. A meditation teacher needs to be intimate with earth, air, fire, water, and space as they are revealed by each of the senses and engaged by each instinct. This is the Tattva Mandala. 

6. EMBRACING DESIRE. The senses, instincts and elements play through our bodies in impulses we call Desires. Skill in meditation includes accepting the gift and revelation of desire and emotion, and the ability to ride the motion into essence. This is the Kama Mandala, the rich mosaic of desiring energy-impulses continually streaming through the body.

7. THE DANCE OF EMOTION. Learn to dance with the full spectrum of emotions that make up a large part of everyone’s meditative experience moment-by-moment. This is one of the biggest challenges meditators face. For full vitality, mental and physical and spiritual health, it is essential to learn how to engage with the wild and peaceful motions of emotions. This is the Emotion Mandala.

8. SKILLS LAB. We will be reviewing the Skill Checklists and Meditation Flowlists, and discussing your adventures in teaching. 


10. BRINGING MEDITATION TO THE WORLD. A skilled meditation teacher has
laghu hasta, a light hand in giving instructions. We will hone the skills and principles we have been studying and practicing, and developing.

Meditation is a built-in ability that all humans have. It's innate and natural to the human body. You could even say that everyone is good at it, each in their own way. Learning to meditate is a matter of building skills for dealing with your inner world. This training focuses on the skills a human being needs to have at her fingertips to meditate successfully, and on the skills a meditation teacher or guide needs to have in order to help a student find their way.

Meditation is instinctive. We all know how to do it, in our essential selves. The practice can feel utterly natural and deeply joyous.

The task of a meditation teacher is to help each individual find what works for their particular nature and daily life. There are thousands of different techniques, and each needs to be modified to suit the daily life of the practitioner. The whole point is to thrive.

The Radiance Sutras presents 112 different doorways into meditation, and we can begin anywhere. This means that when you are teaching meditation, you do not have to impose one standard technique on everyone, and then watch many of them fail. You can help your students to explore and find what they love, right at the beginning, and then evolve more and more versatility.

This approach originates in the classical yoga techniques as presented in the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, enhanced by decades of scientific research, and refined by forty-five years of Lorin’s teaching experience.

Meditation is the practice of tending to the song of life flowing through the body - attending, delighting in, tuning ourselves to this magical universe in which we live, and preparing ourselves to live more fully. This is how I think of meditation. The ancient traditions have bequeathed to us a vast wealth of techniques and their notes on experience. To accept the gift, we have to adapt the classical and eternal into the present. Yoga is always about adapting its methods for the bodies of the people in the room.

In the modern West, there is a revolution underway, an awakening, such that yoga and meditation have become completely mainstream. The challenge now is to train enough meditation teachers to meet the need. It will be decades before there are enough skilled meditation teachers. Let’s get to work.
