Wild Serenity in Love
Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California
January 24-29, 2016

To live and love fully takes courage and all the inner resources one can muster. Embodied practices such as meditation and movement bolster the heart and inspire the expression of love in all its forms. Life is relationship — with the self, nature, creativity, and one another. Meditation can be defined as intimacy with life. Through meditation we pay attention to the current of vitality and love flowing through us, and ride it inward to our essences. This is an instinctive ability and we all can do it. Nature is wild and serene, and so too is our inner nature. In this approach, you embrace the fullness of being — vastness and vulnerability, sensuality, and surging power. The course alternates sitting and moving meditations that gently awaken the senses, open flow in the body, and stretch the mind in wonder and awe.

This workshop is for everyone on the path of intimacy. Drawing on four decades of teaching and thirty years of relationship, authors Maurine and Roche will share their experience with humor and compassion. If you want to tap into more joy and inspiration, if you long for more intimacy with yourself and others, then perhaps it’s time for Wild Serenity in Love. This course is also useful for those in the helping professions.

Instinct to Meditate
Lorin will be giving a presentation on "The Instinct to Meditate," summarizing his research with meditators who are thriving in their practice, year after year. As part of his PhD research at the University of California at Irvine, Lorin conducted hundreds of two-hour interviews with meditators of all types, simply listening as they described, moment-by-moment, what they were experiencing. One finding is that no matter what the brand of meditation you practice - Zen, Vipassana, Sikh, Christian, Catholic, yoga, Buddhism, or self-taught and self-invented, meditators who blossom over the long term seem to make subtle internal adaptations so that their technique has elements of homing, exploring, communing, bonding, resting, loving, and taking nourishment – the deep instinctive motions of life.

SEPTEMBER 9 – 14, 2015
West Coast Bhakti Fest, Joshua Tree, California

Join Lorin and Camille in playing with The Radiance Sutras at
Bhakti Fest in Joshua Tree. In these workshops, we will be improvising with the Sutras, exploring the relationship we have in this moment with life’s inward and outward call, letting the text remind us of the richness of the life force permeating our bodies at all times.

Wonder Friday 9-11 12 noon to 1:30 PM Workshop Hall 2. The sense of inquiry, awe, amazement, and wonder as opening the doors of perception.
Adventure Saturday 9-12 11 AM to 12:30PM Workshop hall 3. Embracing each moment as a surprising journey, expedition, and pilgrimage to the holy now.
Elixir Sunday 9-13  11 AM to 12:30 Workshop Hall 1. Savoring the juicy essence of life, soma, the body’s own natural happy chemicals.

Wonder opens the doors of perception. Vismaya, “wonder, surprise, amazement, bewilderment, perplexity.”

The sense of
Adventure is openness to experience, willingness to embrace each moment as yatra (yātrā), a journey, march, expedition, pilgrimage.

Soma, the juicy
elixir of life, is a byproduct of being in love with the essence of life. Mythically, soma “juice, extract, juice of the soma plant” is the exhilarating psychedelic herb that gives visions. Physiologically, soma is the body’s own natural capacity for divine perception.

The Radiance Sutras at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California
June 19-21 2015
Friday night through Sunday noon
with Camille Maurine and Dave Stringer

Join author Lorin Roche, his dancer-yogini wife Camille Maurine, and musician-songwriter Dave Stringer for a weekend of meditation, movement, and song. Come sing your heart out, dance, and rock the poetry of one of the most beautiful yoga texts in existence.

Come play in the luminous world of The Radiance Sutras, a sensuous, poetic version of a classic yoga text, the Vijñana Bhairava Tantra. The name means “The terror and joy of realizing oneness with the Soul,” and the text describes 112 meditations, each a doorway from our everyday life experience into contact with the sacred healing powers of our inner world.

The essence of these meditations is simple:

· Select some aspect of life that you love, and dive in

· Allow your love to attract you inward toward inspiration

· You don’t have to change yourself

· You don’t have to sit still

· You don’t have to sit cross-legged

· You don’t have to make your mind blank

· You don’t have to calm down

· The more real with yourself you are, the better

The Embraceable Universe

by Dr. Lorin Roche

When the dog jumps up on your lap, how do you hold her? What about when the cat glides onto your lap? When you are walking down the street and see a friend, how do you hug him? What if it has been a really long time and you are flooded with surprise and delight? Or if it is a “shaking-hands” kind of relationship, what is the quality of that contact? How do you hold a baby, a 5-year old child, a teenage boy? And when you are alone with your lover, how do you hold them?

Holding is a sweet science. In every moment, each creature in our lives, every being, needs and deserves a different way of being held. A different nuance of holding is called for in every instant – holding tight, or touching lightly. When we are away from the people we love, we hold them in our hearts and cherish the communion. Holding is not just physical, it is mental, emotional, passionate and sensitive.

Yoga, our favorite word, refers to physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual holding. The Sanskrit root of yoga is yuj, “to join, unite, connect, to embrace," and a range of extended meanings including, "exciting, an exciter.” This makes sense because where there is union, there is an exciting embrace, a continuous continuum of communion. (Yuj, along with yoga, have vast semantic range. These links are to the Monier-Williams Sanskrit English Dictionary online.)

Dharana is “holding, keeping in remembrance,” and is one of the angas (limb, member, subordinate division or department) of yoga. Dharana invites us to pay attention to a thousand ways of holding – hold a pose, hold your breath, hold the sound of a mantra (tool of thought) in your awareness, hold the image of a mandala (circle) or yantra (diagram) in your mind’s eye. In meditation, select an aspect of the life force – pranashakti – you love, hold it in your awareness, and then allow yourself to dissolve into it. While you are practicing meditation, the manner of holding changes as rapidly as when we are holding anything in the outer world – a continual adjustment and dance of responsiveness, changing many times per second.

Meditation is intimacy with the energies of life. When we practice, we are in close communion with the vibrancy of pranashakti. As with any intimate relationship, we are continually called to improve our skills at noticing and responding to the ever-changing moods of our lover. In each moment, there is a particular way of embracing, cherishing, and adoring the rhythm. For example, if we are alert, each moment of breathing is an interplay of nourishing, purifying, soothing, exciting, inspiring, and informing. When we breathe in, we embrace the incoming air and may hold it for an instant at the end of the inhalation; when we breathe out we give our breath to the world. At the end of the exhalation, in that emptiness, we may experience being held by the ocean of air. An essential gift of the experience of holding is being held by something larger, embraced by the benevolent forces of creation.

Many kinds of people in the world are skilled at touching. Dancers are in touch with every part of the body as it moves. Race car drivers have incredible kinesthetic awareness of the vibration of the engine as it comes through their feet, legs, and seat, and can feel the road with their fingertips. People who love babies know how to hold them just right. Horse riders and whisperers can communicate with the animals through minute touches of their hands and legs. Musicians of all kinds know how to caress their instrument, whether they are touching strings, drums, or keyboards. Sex is an unlimited universe of touching, holding, and embracing. We all love touch, each in our own way, and touch is ecstasy.

Embracing, holding, touching – these are central skills to meditative practice. What we learn in the outer world, as we greet our friends, hang out with people we love, and interact with animals, teaches us how to be in touch with the inner world. Over the past 45 years of teaching meditation, it is always great fun to work with people who are skilled at touch because their ability to tolerate intimacy lets them become advanced meditators, right from the beginning. They may have only been meditating for a day, but when I listen to them describe their experiences with touching and being touched by the flow of prana in their bodies, it sounds like poetry, and a fresh revelation of the yoga texts. Meditation invites us to engage with the internal music of mantras, the inner massage of breathing, and the inner artwork of mandala visualizations. Paying attention in this way, we continually learn subtle nuances of what it is to hold and cherish one another.

The wrong approach to meditation can damage your capacity for intimacy. There are thousands of styles and techniques of meditation, and many of them were developed as a support for those on the path of denial and detachment. For centuries, meditation teachers have tended to be lonely males who are out of touch and desperately lonely. They set themselves up as gurus in order to have control over other people, because they know so little about a relationship built on equality. This is the Wizard of Oz complex – a lost professor who puts up a screen and creates a grandiose persona. This particular type is over-represented in the field of meditation, and the language they use tends to be distancing, cold, and elitist.

The best meditation teachers are those who are good at intimate communion, in whatever field interests them: sex, babies, therapy, sports, music. Blind people would be great meditation teachers because of their alertness to sound and touch. So come on, all you people who are good at embracing in any realm: learn to meditate, and learn to teach meditation in a life-affirming way, and bring the warmth of your love of life to this aspect of yoga. We need you.

THE RADIANT BODY - at Prana Yoga in La Jolla California

Saturday 12/13/14 11:45 AM to 4:45 PM (that’s 12 13 14 at a bit before 12)

The message of the chakras (energy centers) is very simple: your entire body, from head to toe, is sacred, pulsating with light and delight, and your yoga practice can be a celebration of this embodiment. Meditation is an effortless and natural rejoicing in the body’s ability to heal and rejuvenate itself. In this workshop, you will learn how to create a meditation practice that goes with your inner nature.

We will be exploring the subtle energies of the body in a series of playful meditations and pranayama exercises. We will be looking at traditional yogic maps of the chakras and modern scientific maps of the nerves, and doing meditations so that you can make your own map of your body, because everyone is different.

Prepare yourself for one startling insight after the other. For example, that meditation is a relief, not an effort. Minds do not wander during meditation, every movement of attention is part of the process. Most of what people think as noise in their heads is actually just the chakras talking to each other and lining up their sequences to do the movements of life.

In meditation, everyone is a beginner, in every moment - because the nature of the life force is to be dynamic, ever-evolving, always moving forward into exciting new levels of perception and expression. You are welcome to come whether you consider yourself a total beginner or an expert.

REQUIRED: The Radiance Sutras: 112 Gateways to the Yoga of Wonder and Delight (Sounds True, 2014). The Radiance Sutras is a fresh version of the classic yoga text, Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, which presents 112 methods of approaching yoga meditation.

Lorin Roche has been teaching meditation for more than 40 years, and practicing Tantra for all that time with great delight. He is married to Camille Maurine, with whom he wrote Meditation Secrets for Women. Lorin is also the author of The Radiance Sutras, Meditation Made Easy, Whole Body Meditations, and Breath Taking. Dr. Roche has a Ph.D. from the University of California where he did research on the language of meditative experience.

Dr. Lorin Roche has been involved in a love affair with the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra since 1968. Set as a conversation between The Goddess and Bhairava, the VBT is a classic yoga text describing 112 different approaches or doorways into meditation. He was trained as a meditation teacher in 1970, and has been sharing the delight ever since. His work focuses on individual differences, helping each person find the meditation practices and styles that help them to thrive. He has a PhD from the University of California at Irvine for his studies of the language meditators use to describe their inner experiences. Dr. Roche is the author of Meditation Made Easy, (HarperOne, 1998); with his wife, Camille Maurine, he wrote Meditation Secrets for Women (HarperOne, 2001). The Radiance Sutras: The Yoga of Wonder and Delight

Register online or call 888-837-2536

Come discover the luminous world of The Radiance Sutras, a fresh translation of an ancient yoga text. In this tradition, meditation is innate, natural, and playful. The Sutras sing of passionate serenity, and being at home in your body with all your senses awake to the vibrancy of life. The Radiance Sutras describe 112 ways to touch the sacred in the midst of everyday life, such as gazing at nature, cherishing breath, listening to music, bathing in silence, dancing, chanting, savoring tastes with intense awareness, and loving and praying continuously.

Embraced by the earth, ocean, and sky at Esalen, this inspiring retreat is a chance to explore a variety of embodied meditations and develop an individualized practice you can take home. All levels of experience are welcome, and all bodies.

Lorin Roche began practicing with the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra in 1968 and brings over forty years’ experience teaching its methods. Camille Maurine brings her deep understanding of movement as our nature. The couple share thirty years of creative teaching together.

Wild Serenity in Love
WEEK OF FEBRUARY 9-14

THE YOGA OF WONDER AND DELIGHT
MEDITATING WITH THE RADIANCE SUTRAS
The Language of the Senses

All around you, in every moment
The world is offering you a feast for your senses.

~ from The Radiance Sutras

Join us for this meditation immersion with internationally renowned meditation teachers, Dr. Lorin Roche and Camille Maurine. We explore the luminous world of The Radiance Sutras, Lorin’s sensuous version of the ancient yoga text, the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra.

This workshop is devoted to the skills of practicing and teaching meditation. If you don’t have a daily meditation practice, you’re missing out on some of the great benefits of yoga.

This weekend module focuses on the senses. In yoga the senses are called the indriyas, a term implying that they are intrinsically sacred. Each sense speaks its own language—touch is a very different language than taste, smell, vision, hearing, or balance.

The senses connect us with our inner and outer world and are doorways to wonder and delight. The more you are alert to your senses, the more engaged and absorbed in meditation you will become.

In this playful training, you will practice these skills:

Scout out your own natural sensory pathways
Listen to and honor another person’s inner language of the senses
Design a satisfying daily meditation practice for yourself and others
Receive coaching from Lorin and Camille on how to modify the classic meditation practices to suit your inner nature. You will also get a chance to practice guiding others in meditation.

Lorin Roche and Camille Maurine are the authors of Meditation Secrets for Women, published by HarperOne. Lorin is also the author of The Radiance Sutras, Meditation Made Easy, and Meditation for Yoga Lovers. Lorin has a Ph.D. from the University of California for his research in the language of meditation.

Qualifies for 20 hours Meditation Training with Yoga Alliance

This will be module 1 of 4 in the 100hr. Yoga Alliance approved Instinctive Meditation Teacher Training. This training is OPEN TO ALL and can be taken as an individual module or you may take all 4 to complete the requirements for the 100hr. certification.

The Art of Teaching Meditation (For yoga teachers and trainees)
Friday, June 6 - 3pm – 8pm

This is a workshop devoted to the skills of meditation and teaching meditation. Meditation and yoga go together and flow together. Asana and pranayama prepare the body for meditation. We can think of meditation as internal yoga, an inner asana flow. Because meditation is internal, there is no one to watch or imitate, so we need to be gentle and follow our instincts.

In this workshop you have the opportunity to explore a variety of different approaches and find what works for you, and also learn from other people what works for them. You get to practice creating meditations for yourself and for others, and guiding them in the process.

A Day at Play with the Radiance Sutras – Open to the Public
Saturday, June 7 - 10am – 5pm (1 hour lunch)

Immerse yourself in love-drenched meditation and movement. During these sessions, we explore the luminous teachings of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, an ancient text that describes 112 awareness practices for touching the sacred in the midst of daily life. THE RADIANCE SUTRAS is a musical, sensuous translation of this tantra by Lorin Roche, who has lived and breathed these yogas for forty years. The Sutras evoke a world of wonder, awe, and delight.

The focus of this workshop is on full-body spirituality ~ accepting every breath, sensual experience, and emotion as a doorway into deep and intimate contact with the energies of life. The practices include mudra (energy gestures), pranayama (breath), mantra (sound), and dhyana (meditation). Anyone can practice these methods. The emphasis is on naturalness, spontaneity, and being at home in the universe. You meet yourself wherever you are, whether you are restless, lonely, loving, tired, excited, nostalgic, or quiet. This workshop is an opportunity to dive into the Sutras that are calling you and receive coaching from Lorin and Camille to make them your own, so that you can embody, move and breathe this luscious reality.

Inner Asana – an Open Meditation Class
Sunday, June 8 - 12-1:30pm

Come learn the secrets of how to allow meditation to feel as natural as breathing, a joyous relief. Hundreds of major scientific studies have documented the benefits of meditation for physical, emotional and mental health.

In this open class, we explore the four “meditative” angas or limbs of Yoga – pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. This is a fun, flowing, breezy 90 minute session anyone can do. Every 5 minutes or so we flow from one posture, and one form of meditation to the other.

Beginners are welcome as are yoga teachers interested in teaching meditation.

AT PLAY WITH THE RADIANCE SUTRAS with Lorin Roche And Camille Maurine
Sat  4/27  @  11:30 am – 6:30 pm
Immerse yourself in love-drenched meditation and movement. During this weekend, we explore the luminous teachings of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, an ancient text that describes 112 awareness practices for touching the sacred in the midst of daily life. 6hrs. $120
INNER ASANA ~ AN OPEN MEDITATION CLASS with Lorin Roche And Camille Maurine
Sun  4/28  @  11:30 am – 1:00 pm
Meditation is the instinct to savor life’s beauty and wonder. The basic motion of attention is as natural as listening to music you love, gazing out over the horizon, or taking a deep breath as you smell something delicious.Come learn the secrets of how to allow meditation to feel as natural as breathing, a joyous relief.
$25 drop in $20 TT or Sonic Grad

THE ART OF TEACHING MEDITATION with Lorin Roche And Camille Maurine
Sun  4/28  @  1:00 pm – 6:00 pm
This is a workshop devoted to the skills of meditation and teaching meditation.Meditation and yoga go together and flow together. Asana and pranayama prepare the body for meditation. We can think of meditation as internal yoga, an inner asana flow. Because meditation is internal, there is no one to watch or imitate, so we need to be gentle and follow our instincts.
All human beings have the ability to meditate. Meditation is a name we give to a universe of techniques for accessing our own innate ability to heal, rejuvenate, and be in love with life. Meditation is intimacy with life. Practicing can feel as natural as breathing. The techniques are ways of perceiving and delighting in the life essence at play in us as prana. When we find the internal styles and practices that match our inner nature, our prakriti, then meditation feels natural and we relish our experience. Meditation becomes an internal vacation and healing Temple that helps us balance our energies and prepare for loving action.
The English word “meditation” encompasses four limbs of Yoga – pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi. These are all natural motions of attention. A meditation teacher needs to be perceptive and supple to cooperate with life’s impulse toward enlightenment.
In this workshop you have the opportunity to explore a variety of different approaches and find what works for you, and also learn from other people what works for them. You get to practice creating meditations for yourself and for others, and guiding them in the process. 5hrs. $100 drop in

Meditation is Instinctive

Modern scientific research indicates that meditation is innate - a built-in ability all human beings have, which gives access to profound restfulness and relaxation. This is in accord with the ancient yoga traditions, which present meditation as
svarasa - a skill that emerges from one’s own essence and instinct, and leads you there. In this workshop (actually, a series of mini-workshops), we begin at the beginning and build a foundation with the naturalness and spontaneity of meditation. We will review the scientific research on the physiology of meditation, which indicates a state of restfulness deeper than sleep combined with enhanced alertness.

Meditation is Sensuous
Meditation techniques use the senses (
indriyas) - balance, touch, motion, oxygen sensing, hearing, vision, and other senses – and we will explore basic meditation practices using each of these – prana (breath), mudra (gesture and motion), mantra (inner sound) and yantra (visualizations).

Meditation is Rhythmic
During meditation, some rhythms are once a second or so (heartbeat), some are every couple of seconds (breathing), others are several times a minute (the basic rhythm of restfulness and activation), and some take several minutes. We will explore all these rhythms and you will be able to apply them to develop your own meditative practice and use them in teaching yoga and meditation. When you learn to accept these rhythms, meditation ceases to be a struggle.

Meditation is Play
Meditation is a name we give to a universe of techniques for accessing our own innate ability to heal, rejuvenate, and be in love with life. Meditation is intimacy with life. Practicing can feel as natural as breathing. The techniques are ways of perceiving and delighting in the life essence at play in us as prana.

Meditation is a Skill that can be Learned and Taught
When we find the internal styles and practices that match our inner nature, our prakriti, then meditation feels natural and we relish our experience. Meditation becomes an internal vacation and healing Temple that helps us balance our energies and prepare for loving action. In this workshop you have the opportunity to explore a variety of different approaches and find what works for you, and also learn from other people what works for them. You get to practice creating meditations for yourself and for others, and guiding them in the process.

All levels of experience are welcome - if you have never meditated or if you have been practicing for years. All you need is a desire to meditate, a longing to be able to access your inner world.

The hours of this workshop count toward a Yoga Alliance 200-hour Yoga Meditation Teacher Training certificate.

Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California
Wild Serenity 5-day
August 19-24, 2012

Wild Serenity is a radically liberating, deeply revitalizing weekend of meditation, movement, and energy practices. The workshop explores the interplay between meditation and expression—the way that contact with the soul inspires dynamic engagement with the outer world, which in turn contributes to a rich inner life.

Meditation can be defined as paying attention to the current of life and love flowing through us and riding it inward to our essence. This is an instinctive ability, a way of accessing inner wisdom, and we all can do it. The course alternates sitting and moving meditations that awaken the senses, soften the heart, and stretch the muscles of the mind. Through body awareness, sound, and breath, you gently and gradually let more life force stream through you.

In this approach, you learn to embrace the fullness of your nature—vastness and vulnerability, sensuality and surging power. You will discover that what might seem like obstacles—raw emotions, restlessness, desire—are actually gateways into vitality, renewal, and creativity.

Living and loving fully takes courage and all the inner resources one can muster. Drawing on three decades of teaching and twenty-nine years of relationship, authors Maurine and Roche share their experience with humor and compassion. If you’ve given up on meditation, or are ready to take your practice to a new level; if you want to tap into more joy and inspiration; if you long for more intimacy with yourself and others, then perhaps it’s time for Wild Serenity. This course is also useful for those in the helping professions.
